Richard Schuman, owner of Makani Kai Air, is a fifth-generation Hawaii resident whose great, great grandfather, Gustav A. Schuman, immigrated to Hawaii from Germany in 1893. Gustav established Schuman Carriage Company, Hawaii’s oldest car dealership, that was in business for over a century.
Big Island residents may be familiar with the Schuman name as Richard’s late father, Dutch, ran the S.C. Ranch. The Dutch Schuman Big Island Paniolo Scholarship fund was established in his memory.
Richard, a graduate of Damien School on Oahu, earned his degree in business at Northwood University in Michigan. In 1996, he established Schuman Aviation Company to provide, “the best customer service of any aviation company in Hawaii, bar none.” Schuman’s local upbringing provided him a firm understanding and appreciation of the culture of the people of Hawaii.
